IACUC Coordinator II

Primary Functions

The IACUC Coordinator II provides technical and administrative coordination for the White Oak Animal Program (WOAP) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), supporting regulatory compliance, protocol management, and program oversight.

Protocol Management & Review

• Manage the full lifecycle of Animal Study Protocol (ASP) submissions — from administrative pre-review through approval — coordinating with investigators, veterinarians, IACUC members, and the IACUC Chair to ensure accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
• Advise investigators and committee members on applicable regulations and guidelines, including the Animal Welfare Act, PHS Policy, AVMA Euthanasia Guidelines, and the ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

Meeting & Documentation Management

• Prepare and distribute monthly meeting materials, record and summarize committee deliberations, and ensure meeting minutes and IACUC actions are documented and communicated to relevant parties in a timely manner.
• Maintain accurate, complete IACUC records and files, including protocol tracking databases (e.g., FileMaker), animal census data, and compliance investigation documentation.

Regulatory Reporting & Accreditation

• Prepare and maintain regulatory submissions and programmatic reports, including USDA reports, OLAW Assurance, AAALACi Program Description and Annual Report, and semi-annual program reviews.
• Manage ongoing correspondence with USDA, OLAW, and AAALACi; assist with Animal Welfare Council (AWC) Data Calls and FOIA requests as needed.

Post Approval Monitoring (PAM)

• Develop, coordinate, and conduct PAM activities, including scheduling observations, performing laboratory visits and protocol assessments, and maintaining records. Provide PAM reports to the IACUC and for inclusion in programmatic documentation.

Training & Compliance

• Manage animal user registration and training compliance (e.g., CITI), maintain training records for all WOAP participants, and provide IACUC orientation for new committee members.

Program Development & Administration

• Develop, review, and update IACUC SOPs, policies, guidelines, and forms to improve and standardize workflows.
• Coordinate semi-annual animal facility and laboratory inspections; assist in maintaining the WOAP web page.

Reporting Line: Reports directly to the DVS IACUC Administrator and WOAP Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR).

Supervises: None

Additional Duties

• Prepare new and updated IACUC guidelines, policies, and procedures as needed.

Qualifications

• Education: B.S. in Biology, Animal Science, or a related discipline preferred; High School diploma or GED required.
• Experience: Minimum 3 years of IACUC office or directly related experience (e.g., PAM, compliance), with demonstrated knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act, AVMA Guidelines, ILAR Guide, PHS Policy, and USDA regulations.
• Certifications: CPIA eligibility preferred; LATG certification preferred or must be obtained within 1 year of hire.
• Technical Skills: Proficiency in IACUC database tools (e.g., FileMaker), Microsoft Office Suite, and standard PC applications required.
• Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams, including researchers, veterinarians, and regulatory bodies.

Facility Trainer I NIH/DVR

Summary

Under the direction of the Training Coordinator and program managers, the responsibilities of the Division of Veterinarian Resources (DVR) Facility Trainer are to execute a continuous training plan for each position on the DVR contract in accordance with the approved Standard Operating Procedures.  Facility Trainer will ensure contract employees are trained in the activities required for the proper care and maintenance of DVR animals and equipment as described in each job description, assigned ASP, SOP, and Priority One Services’ Employee Training Plan.

Requirements:

B.S. degree in biology, animal science, or similar discipline preferred, and or AALAS certification (LATG), ILAM, CMAR. LAT will be considered but LATG must be obtained within 1 year of employment. The Facility Trainer(s) must possess a working knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry with multiple species including non-human primates, veterinary technology, and facility management. Proven ability and demonstrated work experience developing lesson plans, preparing technical presentations, workshops, or seminars;  prior teaching experience a plus. Must be literate in English, both oral and written, and proficient in computer applications, to include, but not limited to Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Outlook. Knowledge of photo/imaging software is also advantageous.

Duties

• Providing training resources and materials to support and supplement continuing education and technical seminars for each employee.
• Implement a training plan for each position on the contract in accordance with the approved SOPs.
• Providing continuous technical training, in multiple departments, to include but not limited to training on SOPs, animal husbandry, safety procedures and facility-specific requirements.
• Ensuring newly hired, promoted, or reassigned employees receive proper orientation, training, curriculum, and guidance, leading to a knowledge/technical assurance for unsupervised work.
• Developing computerized technical training modules, slide presentations, and videos.
• Providing support for AALAS certification and maintaining certification data/documentation by employees.
• Maintaining a database of training curriculum received by each employee.
• Perform annual performance reviews directly observing each employee to ensure that they maintain their technical competence.
• Ensuring all training deliverables are prepared/submitted as per Task Order requirements.
• Assuming the responsibilities of the Training Coordinator when the Training Coordinator is absent.
• Performing duties or tasks delegated from contract or Government management.
• Assisting the Training Coordinator with the OA/QC program.
• Assisting the Training Coordinator to ensure that all safety requirements are met; and
• Assisting the management team in team building exercises.

Laboratory Animal Resources/Research Resources - Rodent Animal Care Technician
(Animal Technician II)
Work Hours:6:00 AM to 2:30 PM from Monday through Friday and supervisor scheduled weekends/holidays/weather emergencies/university closings.

Summary:
The Laboratory Animal Resource (LAR) group at Princeton University is a centralized administrative department reporting to the Dean for Research and is responsible for animal and veterinary care of all research animals at Princeton University. The Animal Technician for the Life Sciences Complex provides state-of-the art animal care for laboratory animals housed within these facilities. He/she receives direction from the LAR Facility Manager. The primary responsibility is to provide animal care to the various laboratory species (rodents, aquatics, and USDA-covered species), the majority will be in the care of rodents. The Animal Technician ensures the cleanliness of the facility and the maintenance of adequate supplies of food and bedding materials, including PPE. The Animal Technician will work together with other technicians according to a schedule prepared by the LAR Manager and must be willing and able to rotate through all LAR facilities. The Animal Technician pursues and improves methods of animal husbandry and resource utilization. He/she ensures the highest quality of laboratory animal care and research support, and has good communication skills with co-workers, the LAR management team, PI’s, research staff, students, facility maintenance crews and other support services. This position reports directly to the Facility Manager.
Animal Husbandry:

• Animal Technicians are considered essential services staff. Essential service staff performs jobs that are necessary and required to maintain basic University operations during scheduled or unscheduled work closures due to emergencies, events or other situations.
• Provides animal care for all species housed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including giving food and water to the animals, changing cages, sanitizing all supplies (cages, water bottles, food bins and other animal care related equipment), maintaining clean animal rooms, procedure rooms, hallways and other support areas, and keeping records related to animal care.
• Completes work in a timely fashion and according to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and follows other written and verbal instructions as needed.
• Monitors animal health and welfare daily and reports sick and dead animals to the responsible researcher and Veterinary Services. Provides treatments to laboratory animals as prescribed by researchers and/or Veterinary Services.
• Monitors, documents and reports deviations of normal, species-specific and environmental parameters such room temperature, humidity, lights and air quality.
• Provides innovative and species-specific environmental enrichment of laboratory animals under the direction of Veterinary Services and according to research needs.
• Conduct AM and PM animal health observations.
• Operates cage washing machinery, ventilated caging, Edstrom watering system, bedding dispensing units, full size to table top autoclaves and other animal care equipment typical of animal care operations while following safety procedures.
• Assists with transgenic rodent breeding colony management. Demonstrates ability to perform tissue sample collection, set up mating pairs, wean animals, and track data in various software applications.
• Discovers and reports any facility maintenance issues to the Lead Animal Technician and Facility Manager.

*Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination is required for all Priority One positions.

Candidate must have a high school diploma or GED and must have at least two years experience working with animals in a laboratory animal facility.  A diploma in a related science field or equivalent is desired. AALAS certification is preferred and laboratory animal experience is required. Salary will be commensurate with experience and AALAS certification level. Preferred skills include experience with:  animal care and husbandry, cagewash procedures, minor technical procedures, multiple species a plus, and recording keeping. “Applicant may be required  to travel to different facilities in Maryland basically; Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park and Laurel" Applicant must be reliable, able to work independently, and interact professionally with the research staff. Applicant must be flexible and learn quickly; be able to stand for prolong periods, bend, reach, and climb. Demonstrated math and reading comprehension and good English oral and written communication skills are required.
